Summary

When connecting your computer to a cable modem such as those used various ISP's such as Virgin Media, Telewest & Blueyonder or when connecting your comptuer to a wired network, you may encounter difficulties connecting via the onboard ethernet controller.

Solution(s)
Changing the link speed for the network controller in Device Manager will often resolves and connectivity issues.
  • Click start Vista logo
  • In the search box type in dev and click device manager in the list of results
  • Click continue to any User Access Control prompt
  • Find your network in the device manager list
  • Right click on it and choose properties
  • Click the advanced tab
  • Select Speed and Duplex from the list of options
  • Change the value to the right to Half Duplex, 100 Mbps
  • Click Ok to make the changes
  • Close Device Manager and restart the computer
  • Test the internet connection once more.
